The author suggests a fresh look to the Mkhitar Gosh studies (as a part of Armenian studies) aiming to make Mkhitar Gosh (XII-XIII centuries) and his main work – the Armenian Lawcode – closer and more understandable to the contemporary professional community, as well as the broader public. As an example of the alleged attainment of that goal the author suggests a Commentary to the Chapter VI of Mkhitar’s own introduction to his Lawcode. The methodology of the Commentary includes drawing parallels between Gosh’s juridical ideas and contemporary legal concepts, as well as casting light to the larger context of Gosh’s time and work. In particular, the author demonstrates that certain legislative techniques used by Mkhitar Gosh in XII century are still actual; he efforts to explain terminology used by Gosh within the modern juridical apparatus; he attempts to reveal the roots of legal mentality patterns in medieval Armenia. In search of Cilician influence over Mkhitar Gosh, the author brings examples of his use of certain ideas by Cilician Armenian authors (e.g., Archbishop Nerses of Lambron and Ignatius of Sev Ler). As a conclusion, the author voices the need for a new wave of Mkhitar Gosh studies focusing at the practical and actual issues.
