The importance of the structural analysis in the project of preservation, strenghtening and reuse of architectural monuments in Armenia

Bazmavep 2014 / 1-2, pp. 60-81

Nowadays the strengthening, preservation, and reuse of cultural heritage around the world is considered to be one of the most important issues the solutions for which, we suppose, first and foremost, are to be found in architectural and engineering sciences, because the preservation of architectural monuments doesn’t only mean the preservation and wise use, but also restoration and strengthening.

Using the latest unprecedented progressive advances in science, the direction of approaches improves every year, but there are also new problems, such as, for example, many cases of inadequate restorations of ancient buildings. Frequently, the decisions for the maintenance or repair of the current state of buildings and structures undermine the preservation of their original architectural meaning and natural materials, as well as the harmony of historic and new landscape. In addition, technical solutions chosen for the strengthening of bearing structures in most cases are not systematic and rational enough.

During strengthening and restoration of monuments, the grounds of the scientific aspects significantly improve engineering and technical solutions. Otherwise, even the most immediate, emergency restoration work would lead to serious conflict with the basic principles of the protection of cultural monuments.

In the national and in the foreign history of restoration of architectural monuments there are well-known errors that arise as a result of underestimating the problems in engineering or architectural aspects. Taking into consideration the fact that the entire territory of Armenia is located in a seismic-prone area, the above-stated has significant practical importance because existing damages in the constructions of historical monuments increase danger at seismic action.

The structural analysis in the project of preservation and reuse for architectural monument solves the major problem for engineers: to get a reliable assessment of the safety margins of existing monuments. For an existing structure, the working life already spent and desirable remaining working life may influence technical decisions. During the work on the basis of calculated studies, it is expected to evaluate any deacrease in seismic risk after the measures proposed for the given structure.

The assessment of the effectiveness of interventions in historical monuments is a domain where decisions should be taken on the basis of risk analyses in order to reach a compromise between the monumental value of the building, the cost of investigations, and the probability and foreseeable consequences of a possible structural deterioration that can cause its destruction.
