Armenian manuscripts of Lviv and the catalogue of Father Hovhannes vardapet Zohrabian

Bazmavep 2022 / 1-2, pp. 184-210

The most important sources for studying medieval repositories-libraries, their handwritten and printed book’s lists, the methods and principles of using the same books in ancient times and other details are numerous lists compiled and not printed, researched in ancient and modern times, as well as in the colophons quite frequent listings of the recipients of same handwritten and printed books. However, such materials examination is almost unprocessed. Among all the manuscripts are printed and studied only two catalogues (Saghmosavank’s and Amrdolu vank’s in Baghesh).

In Yerevan, the Mashtots Matenadaran has started a difficult long work on the combined examination of the scattered lists in manuscripts and lists of handwritten books in the colophons, the manifestation of which is this article. Here is a very valuable list of manuscripts and kondaks of the productive intellectual theologian Mkhitarian vardapet Hovhannes Zohrapian (1756-1829) of the 18-19th centuries, which he saw and recorded in Lviv. Some of these handwritten materials, due to efforts of the same Vardapet, became part of the Mkhitarists’ Matenadaran, and the current location of the other part of the manuscripts still needs to be found out in order to begin their study.

Here was illustrated a page of the history of manuscripts’ repositories of the Armenian settlements of Lviv and Eastern Europe as a whole, which finds out new prospects for continuing work in this direction. This article is also a commemoration of the grateful vardapet of Armenian studies, his scientific achievements and his contribution to the development of Mkhitarists’ Matenadaran.
