The fast of catechumens in the works of armenian classical authors, II

Bazmavep 2022 / 1-2, pp. 129-183

The research examines in detail created for more than 10 centuries (IV-XV) works dedicated to the Weekly Fast of Catechumens, which begins three weeks before Lent and is characteristic only of the Armenian Church. The time evolution of these works is shown, starting with historical evidence, hinting at the emergence of this post, ending with mature theological-symbolic commentaries.

In the work, it is shown how the texts devoted to the Fast of Catechumens, in each century received a certain direction and development.

The research highlighted the critical writings of heterodox authors against the Fast of Catechumens, in particular, the Greek-Byzantine and Georgian pamphlets and fables, which caused more and more the creation of polemical texts from the teachers of the Armenian Church.

Throughout the analysis, several historical prerequisites were revealed that may solve the mystery of the Fast of Catechumens.
