Borders of Ayrarat governorship and Vachutian’s own territories

Bazmavep 2021 / 3-4, pp. 247-260

The territory of the governorship of Ayrarat was undoubtedly wider than the own possessions of the Vachutyans. We believe that the entire territory of the Ararat valley was under the Vachutyans’ rule.

To the south-west of their own possessions, the Ayrarat province included a part of the Kotayk province with the settlement of Yerevan, almost the entire province of Vostan Hayots.

To the west and south-west, the borders of the governorship stretched along the slopes of Mount Tsaghkunyats parallel to the Hrazdan River to Yerevan and, including Yerevan, in a curved line from Khor Virap to the south went to the Araks River, along the river they ascended up to the border of the fortress-city of Saint Mari, then along the river they stretched to the central part of Shirak.

In the Armenian state system of the Zakaryans, the protection of the southern borders from Syunik to the northern-western border of Dvin was carried out by the governorships of the Orbelyans and Khaghbakyans, and in the central part from the border of Dvin to the capital of Ani, this duty was assigned to the Vachutyans.
