Hovhannes Kajaznuni in Soviet Armenia

Bazmavep 2021 / 3-4, pp. 232-246

The well-known national-political and party statesman Hovhannes Kajaznuni was one of the few Armenian politicians living in exile who could not withstand homesickness, and, ignoring all sorts of dangers, nevertheless returned to Soviet Armenia. In the historiography of Kajaznuni there is a lot of ambiguous information about the years in Soviet Armenia: few people know about the fate of the great Armenian after returning to the homeland. In Soviet Armenia, he worked as a highly qualified architect, received the title of professor, read lectures at the Technical Faculty of Yerevan University, and then at the Engineering Construction Institute. At the same time, he experienced deep disappointment in his life, in the face of the negative phenomena of the "personality cult" period. At the end of July of 1937, O. Kajaznuni was arrested, and on December 5 the k (USSR) ICRC Troika sentenced O. Kajaznuni as an active participant in the Dashnaktsutyun to death with the confiscation of his personal property. However, his execution was postponed on the basis of a diagnosis of tuberculosis, delivered by the prison doctor. Shortly thereafter, on January 15, 1938, at the age of 70, the first Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, Hovhannes Kajaznuni, died in the prison hospital.
