The verse on oriental and Persian worlds by Ignatios Tigranakerttsi (18th century)

Bazmavep 2013 / 3 - 4, pp. 93-110

One can find an unpublished work written by Ignatios Tigranakerttsi – an Armenian clergyman of the turn of the 17th-18th centuries – in manuscript No.
1430 at the Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts (Matenadaran). It is a story written in verse in which the author describes the Turkish-Persian wars of 1720-30, Nadir Shah’s victories, and the state in which Armenians and Armenia
were to be found during that period. Our knowledge about Ignatios comes from a colophon which tells us that he lived and received the rank of a clergyman in the St. Astvatsatsin monastery in Arghni, situated in the province Paghnatun. He has written his story from a strongly patriotic perspective.
This article presents Ignatios Tigranakerttsi’s poem in its entirety. It can have some value from historical, linguistic, and literary points of view.
