April 11/24, 1915 – The first obvious day of the Armenian Genocide according to a unique document which has become an exhibit in the State History Museum of Armenia

Bazmavep 2015 / 1 - 2, pp. 202-268

The author of the article introduces the results of her recent years’ study of a unique museum exhibit which found shelter in the State History Museum of Armenia in 1965. The object is a rosary at first sight, at the same time it is a certificate of the first obvious day of the Armenian Genocide as on the initial disproportionate bead is engraved: “Changhri, 1915, April 11, keepsake” (April 11 is the same April 24 by the old calendar). Then there is an engraved name or surname on each of the following 99 uniform and cylindrical beads; on the 55th is engraved “Levon-2”; on the 86th – “Ohnikeank-4”. Altogether the rosary informs about 103 exiles. The worry- beads were engraved by an exile-martyr, Varteres Atanasian, whose name is on the 71st bead and who was a constable before being exiled. Thus he tried to give as more names of his exile-friends as possible.
After laborious task of long duration - three decades – the author of the article has collected considerable information not only about the exiles of Changhri, but also about those who as well were arrested on April 11/24 and sent to Ayash: those were mainly members of the Armenian national parties.
During the study new names of those exiled to Changhri and Ayash have been found.
In this article is included newfound information about again both Changhri and Ayash exiles: these are biographies, photos of the exiles and their relatives. The materials were got from corresponding scientific sources, from the memorandums of the survivors, and also are a result of the responses of their descendants. Here are introduced as well photo-episodes of Changhri and Ayash exile-towns.
