Fr. Ghevont Alishan’s philosophical and historical concepts about “East-West” relation

Bazmavep 2020 / 3-4, pp. 276-288

The current situation in the world testifies to the end of the version of globalization based on the system of Western values, the latest in the history of our civilization. The essence of this process was the rejection of the highest spiritual and moral principles of the organization of social life and free cultural creation of the peoples of the world. Opposition to this process is observed even in the philosophical and historical concepts of the Armenian thinkers of the 19th century, and, in particular, the Armenian religious thinker Ghevond Alishan.
The idea of a certain opposition and interaction between Western and Eastern civilizations, conditioned by the integrity of these two megacycles of History, serves as the initial premise in the concept of Alishan. Alishan calls the East as the cradle of human civilization and the guardian of Tradition. The thinker believes that the main difference of the West is its constant craving for the new and the desire to unify the life of peoples. The East, unlike the West, seeks to preserve its civilizational origin and the cultural diversity of nations. Alishan considers the degree of spiritual and moral maturity of nations, and not the level of development of their socio-political life, to be the criterion of the historicity (civilization) of nations. In this context, Alishan notes the special historical (spiritual) mission of one of the most ancient nations in the world – the Armenian nation.
