Comparison between four poetic works of Alishan and Khrimian Hayrik

Bazmavep 2020 / 3-4, pp. 251-275

The article compares four poetic works of Alishan and Khrimian Hayrik, which are thematically similar to "The Lamen" of Khorenatsi.

An attempt is made to show the peculiarities of the worldview, artistic thinking of the two poets imbued with the love of God and homeland, the commonalities of moods, inner state, feelings, conditioned by the contrast between the glorious past and the catastrophic present of the Armenian world.

In Alishan's work his knowledge as Armenologist, scientist, and ethnologist acquires a poetic breath and imagery.

As for Khrimian, the poetic imagination is mixed with the indelible impressions of his young years of his pilgrimage. If Alishan glorifies the memory of the first centuries of Christianity in Armenia, Khrimian relates to the heroic episodes of the past parallelizing them to the time he lived.

The above-mentioned refers to the two laments based on Khorenatsi’s one. Like Khorenatsi, Alishan grieved upon the lost glories of the past, hardly reflecting on the reality of his time, while Khrimian, in parallel with Khorenatsi, presented the vicious phenomena of the Armenian life of his time and grieved for them.
