The issues of the history and theory of music on the pages of “Bazmavep” (1996-2016)

Thanks to Father Ghevond Alishan and the other Mkhitarist Fathers, the studies devoted to the issues of the history and the theory of music have always occupied their worthy place on the pages of “Bazmavep” journal from the very time of its foundation. This tradition continued in the 20th century as well. Arme­nian musicologists have of­ten published various articles and materials in “Ba­zmavep”. These authors include Robert Atayan, Nicoghos Tahmizian, Anna Asatrian, Alex­ander Siranosian, Arpi Var­doumian, as well as the author of these lines and others.

In 1996, N. Tahmizian, a long-time researcher and high-ranking scholar of the Mashtots Matenadaran, doctor of art criticism and musicologist of blessed memory, published in “Bazmavep” an article entitled “Bazmavep” and the issues of Ar­me­nian music where he analyzed a series of articles devoted to music and, more spe­cifi­cally, to Armenian music, published at various times in “Bazmavep”.

On the occasion of this scientific conference, I had the idea to review the studies published by Armenian musicologists on the pages of “Bazmavep” between 1996-2016, after the abovementioned article, trying to analyze them from the viewpoint of the chosen themes, as well as their theoretical or aesthetic orientation.

As our analysis showed, in 1996-2016 the publications of the Armenian musi­colo­gists on the pages of “Bazmavep” certify that since the time of Father Ghevond Alishan and thanks to his efforts, many issues of the history, the theory and the aesthetics of music have occupied an important place on the pages of this prestigious journal. These articles and studies contributed not only to develop Armenian studies, but also musicology, as well as to the propaganda of Armenian music in inter­national scientific circles.
