Dashnaktsutyun trial and Hovhannes Qajaznuni

Bazmavep 2016 / 3 - 4, pp. 214-224

After the failure of the 1905-1907 revolution in Russia, the period of repressions under Stolypin began in the country. The Armenian Revolutionary Federation - Dashnaktsoutiun party was charged with carrying out anti-Russian propaganda, spreading separatist ideological sentiments as well as attempting to replace the tsarist regime through political and economic terror. After an investigation, the Dashnak party was put on trial. Among hundreds of detainees exiled to the prison in Novocherkassk was Hovhannes Kachaznouni. The prosecutor managed to provide evidence for the charges made against Kachaznouni. Moreover, there was documentation about Kachaznouni belonging to the Dashnaktsoutiun. Escaping from the trial, Kachaznouni fled abroad. The trial did not manage to prove, however, that the Dashnaktsoutiun itself held anti-government positions. The liberal Russian press of the time criticised the entire trial. Taking into consideration heightened negative reactions, the government decided on a verdict of not guilty for 94 persons, while the others were subjected to relatively light punishments: 52 persons had a penalty of long-term arrest and exile imposed on them. The fact that Russia started to pursue a more active foreign policy in the Balkans and considered Armenians as allies can explain the outcome.
